    Democrats say eliminating USAID is 'opaque and Orwellian'

    Democratic Reps. Gerald Connolly and Suhas Subramanyam of the House Oversight Committee told Marco Rubio that the Trump administration is “attempting to purge” USAID without congressional authorization.

    Members of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform condemned the Trump administration’s freeze of federal foreign aid and efforts to eliminate the U.S. Agency for International Development, calling them “opaque and Orwellian.”

    Devex obtained a letter from ranking Democratic Reps. Gerald Connolly and Suhas Subramanyam, both from Virginia, addressed to USAID Acting Administrator Marco Rubio on Friday.

    In it, they accused the administration of “attempting to purge” USAID without congressional authorization, warning that the potential repercussions are dire.
