Dengue, the ‘poster child’ for climate change's impacts on health

    By Sara Jerving // 27 June 2024

Cases of dengue are rising explosively in the Americas. Latin America and the Caribbean have reported over 4,500 deaths and 9.3 million cases this year, which is twice the number of cases the region reported all of last year.

These regional figures also surpass the global figures from last year — which was the worst year for dengue on record — with over 6.5 million cases.

But it's not just the Americas — over the past two decades there’s been a tenfold increase in cases of dengue globally. Bangladesh had its worst outbreak in history last year.
