Knowing what skills are in demand across global development could help you land your next role in a highly competitive job market. To understand what employers are looking for — skills you need to further your career and experience you should highlight in your CV — Devex spoke to recruiters during our annual career fair in Washington, D.C, earlier this year.

Recruiters from top global development organizations such as DAI, Intrahealth International, and World Vision International shared insights on trends impacting the sector and skills that help you stand out as a candidate.

    More on M&E:

► Software and resources for M&E professionals

► How to build your expertise: Monitoring and evaluation

Monitoring and evaluation — or measurement and learning as it is sometimes called — is a skill in high demand, according to Julie Smallwood, senior proposal recruiter at Intrahealth International. This is in part because donors put an emphasis on having results they can point to, she added.

The sector is also seeing a rise in programming around public financial management and there is a need for skills related to this, explained Nev Ezzat, senior recruitment manager at DAI. This could be an area of opportunity for professionals from the private sector who have expertise in budgeting or tax revenues.
