As more people are choosing not to self-identify as male or female or to identify as a gender different from the one assigned at birth, encouraging the disclosure of pronouns in the workplace can create a culture of respect and belonging.

This is why Devex recently launched the ability for job seekers to add their preferred gender pronouns to their job candidate profiles. It also got us thinking: Where do development organizations stand on this issue and what more can be done to create true inclusion in the workplace?

In this edition of Career Hub, find out what sector and labor rights experts told us about the state of LGBTQ inclusion in the development workplace. I’m also sharing tips for how to bolster your networking efforts on LinkedIn. Plus, you can explore new job opportunities at Project Hope, Landesa, and many more top development organizations.

    How to foster LGBTQ inclusion

“Power dynamics exist in our sector that make it much more difficult for LGBTIQ+ people to speak up and push back in ways that value their own identity.”

    — Kevin Wanzor, head of operations, OutRight Action International

Encouraging the use of pronouns in the workplace is just the first step in creating more inclusive working environments for members of the LGBTQ community and much more needs to be done, sector and labor rights experts told us. Here are a few ideas for how to foster further inclusion.

✅ Promote internal dialogue. Organizations should create safe spaces for employees to talk about these issues. LGBTQ economic and labor rights expert Gurchaten Sandhu believes fear of losing a job and not wanting to complain prevent open dialogue on how to create a more inclusive environment.

✅ Lead by example. The Association of LGBTQ+ Corporate Directors suggests organization leaders incorporate gender-neutral language in board meetings and use “they” or “their” when addressing a wider group, and drop the use of “Mr, Mrs, Miss, and Ms” in meeting minutes.

✅ Move beyond pronouns. The employee benefits an organization provides should also be mindful of the different needs of the LGBTQ community, including support for hormone replacement therapy or surgery, experts said.

    Tipsheet: Networking on LinkedIn

Having a standout LinkedIn profile will put you in a fine position to start getting the most out of the platform. But without the ability to engage meaningfully with other users, you won’t take full advantage of all the career development opportunities the platform has to offer.

Here are three key points to consider based on advice from Simone Anzböck, an international executive coach and consultant, given during a recent digital event for Devex Career Account members.

    • Stop scrolling and engage. If you want to be visible on LinkedIn that means three things: liking and commenting on other users' posts, joining groups, and using hashtags.

    • Be helpful to others. One of the best ways to network on LinkedIn is simply to be helpful. “I believe in good social karma. If you give people things [and] if you help other people, it will come back to you,” Anzböck said.

    • Train the algorithm. LinkedIn’s algorithm determines what content is shown in your feed, and it takes into account everything you do on the platform — from the topics you engage with to the people you connect with.
