Career advice from a climate change adviser
Devex spoke with Pacific regional climate change adviser Edel Heuven about her work at Save the Children Australia and what skills are important to have in this evolving field.
Understand the needs of different stakeholders. This includes actively listening to country office staff, local partners, government representatives, and community members. Heuven says it's then important to explore how that information can be effectively translated into proposals that align with donor expectations, concrete advocacy initiatives, and regional strategies.
Integrate local solutions. Keeping up to date with the existing practices and tools in the climate space is important, but so is actively sourcing and considering traditional knowledge and practices. Heuven recommends attending the community-based adaptation conferences organized by the International Institute for Environment and Development.
Climate change is broad, find a niche. Identify the specific aspect of climate change you are most drawn to and stay up to date with new developments within that area. "Look for an organization or institution and roles that fit with your interests and values, and actively try to build your professional network within the field," she says.

What is the appropriate limit for follow-up attempts after an interview before deciding to discontinue further communication?
Sometimes, silence is not because you're not a top candidate; it's also because there might be some decisions that have to be made on the back end before they can move forward with the position. Follow up twice and leave it at that.
I tell people to practice a little bit of detachment when it comes to the interview process. Most employers aren't going to let a good candidate get away, and if they do, then that's their loss. Messages in a follow-up aren't going to get you the job faster.
The other thing I wanted to add is to make sure you're not going over your point of contact. If your point of contact is the recruiter, message them directly; don't send messages to the interview panel. They're probably just going to direct you back to the recruiter, and it might annoy them that you're following up with them directly.
