It’s that time of year again when I prepare for another week of sleepless nights to make sure you, our dear readers, are up to speed on the important decisions coming out of Geneva during the 76th World Health Assembly. Rest assured, our team will tune in to the 1,000 statements — am I undercounting? — that WHO member states will be delivering inside the Palais des Nations starting this Sunday.
But what exactly are we expecting from this year’s WHA?
What many folks in global health and WHO will be looking out for is financing. This is the year when countries are meant to put into action what they agreed to last year — i.e., gradually increase their assessed contributions to WHO. The first increase of 20% is expected this year as they approve WHO’s 2024-2025 budget.
