Drought Leaves Thousands Hungry in Burundi

Approximately 35, 710 households in northern Burundi are suffering from hunger due to lack of rain in the region, IRIN reports. Many locals are forced to seek employment in nearby Rwanda to feed their families, the news agency adds. Charles Dei, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Burundi, said the U.N. will start to distribute food aid in the region, giving priority to children, the elderly, pregnant women and other vulnerable groups. The agency will also design food-for-work activities to prevent people from leaving the region in search of work.
