UNESCO was expected to vote Oct. 21 to continue to halt the awarding of a prize named after Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, according to European diplomats. The U.S. and other Western nations secured an agreement from the UNESCO board’s African members on a compromise, which mandates the continuing suspension of the prize “until a consensus is reached” among members, The New York Times reports.
