The European Commission has entered into a cooperation agreement with the government of Ukraine for the development its regions, particularly the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.
On May 13, European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Štefan Füle signed a €12 million ($17 million) financing deal with Vasiliy Dzharty, chairman of Crimea’s Council of Ministers, in Brussels in support of the Joint Cooperation Initiative in Crimea. The initiative aims to boost tourism, build social infrastructure and promote foreign direct investment in the region.
Füle said he is “convinced that this initiative will strongly contribute to reducing the disparity and development gap between Crimea and other regions” of Ukraine, according to a European Commission news release.
