The European Union plans to increase its financial assistance for Ivory Coast and Southern Sudan, according to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.
In remarks before a plenary meeting of the African Union Commission and European Commission, Barroso said the EU could provide €25 million ($35.9 million) to support recovery and restoration of the rule of law in Ivory Coast. This will be in addition to the €180 million pledged by the EU in April, Barosso said.

Barroso added that the Europe Commission plans to increase its aid to Southern Sudan, which is expected to announce its independence as Africa’s newest state in July, to reach €300 million. The EU has already allocated €200 million for Southern Sudan.
