What do emerging global issues such as climate change and the changing face of conflict mean for how the U.K. does development? Alex Evans of New York University can think of four courses of action.
Evans argues that the U.K. should focus more on poor people and not on poor countries, focus more on reducing vulnerability and building resilience, and focus more on what happens within poor countries and less on what happens in the global state. He also notes that the Department for International Development needs more personnel more than it needs additional funding.
He presented these recommendations and a discussion of several global trends before the International Development Select Committee at the U.K. House of Commons on Oct. 12. Evans shared this presentation in an entry on the “Global Dashboard” blog, where he outlined how the U.K. and DfID could adapt to these global trends.
