UNAIDS staff are bracing themselves as the United Nations joint program kicks off a planned restructuring in response to donor funding cuts.
Management announced the restructuring during town hall early in the year, after several donor governments signaled or confirmed reductions in their contributions. The Swiss government declared it would slash some $3 million from the program in 2025, gutting its entire contributions. The suspension of U.S. government funding has intensified concerns, adding a sense of urgency to the financial challenges.
UNAIDS was among the thousands of organizations that received termination letters from the U.S. government for its funding. It’s still unclear how many of its programs are affected and UNAIDS said it’s still gathering more details from the U.S. government.
