The question at the upcoming G-8 summit is not whether food security will be on the agenda, but rather which food security-related issues will be up for debate.
World leaders attending the summit will be launching a new food security initiative ahead of the G-8 meeting. Many fear that important items, such as addressing malnutrition and scaling up public sector resources, may not make it to the discussion table.
Oxfam and ONE have come up with several points the development community should pay close attention to at the summit. These include:
Total funding to be committed to the new initiative.
Whether it will work well with country strategies.
The G-8’s plans to hold the private sector accountable.
The difference with its predecessor, the L’Aquila Food Security Initiative.
G-8 leaders will announce the new initiative in Washington Friday (May 18) before heading out to Camp David in Maryland. The summit ends May 19.
