Miroslav Lajcak, a former foreign minister of Slovakia and high representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, is the front-runner for being European Union foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton’s assistant in the Balkan regions.

Lajcak is the most suitable of the candidates for the position, according to Serbia’s Tanjug news agency, which cited European diplomats. If appointed, he will be in charge of EU relations and relevant issues in the Balkans, Central Asia, Turkey, Russia and the South Caucasus region, the agency adds.
