Mark Suzman, the CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, wrote a scathing indictment in Foreign Affairs on how “rich countries’ selfish pandemic responses stoked distrust” between the global north and south.
Quoting Zimbabwean businessman and philanthropist Strive Masiyiwa, he wrote that rich countries’ behavior during the pandemic perpetuated “a deliberate global architecture of unfairness” that fomented a deep sense of betrayal around the world.
In an interview with Devex, he elaborated on how this “corroded trust” shaped the discourse over the fairness of the global financial architecture at last week’s World Bank-International Monetary Fund annual meetings in Morocco.
