Embattled rockstar and aid campaigner Bob Geldof was on the defensive anew and issued a 6,000-word rebuttal of “Starsuckers,” a documentary film that criticizes the shallow media reporting on celebrities, especially the British musician for alleged misuse of money raised in his fundraising concerts, The Guardian reports.
In a 6,000-word letter to the film’s director, Chris Atkins, Geldof denied accusations about his aid campaigns, saying he had considerable influence over the world’s decision-makers and had accomplished something that “the lobbying might of the total NGO community” had failed to do.
He cited the success of the Live 8 campaign, a string of concerts that preceded the G-8 summit in Scotland.
“They are the vast billions watching… brought together around the electric hearth of the TV or computer screen by the Pied Pipers of Rock ‘n Roll,” he wrote.
“Starsuckers” is set to premiere in the United Kingdom on April 6. Its release follows a BBC report alleging the diversion of much of aid funds raised from Geldof’s 1985 Live Aid charity concert, which the rockstar vehemently denied.
