Jon Liden of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria warned that climate change will soon topple HIV/AIDS as top priority for donor funding. Liden said that the organization, in view of the series of high-level reports on climate change, “is not naive about what [the increased importance of] global warming will do to AIDS funding in a few years’ time.” At the Heiligendamm summit in June, leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized nations pledged $60 billion to combat AIDS and other diseases. But AIDS advocacy groups, according to Liden, expressed “great disappointment” as the G8 only promised AIDS treatment coverage for five million patients instead of the desired 10 million.
