Global Partnership for Education to raise $3.5B from donors, launch new funding model

The Global Partnership for Education, which is currently replenishing its funds for 2015-2018, plans to raise up to $3.5 billion in pledges from donors and launch a new funding model at a conference hosted by the European Union in Brussels in June.

GPE estimates that amount will support 29 million children of primary and lower secondary school age.

Meanwhile, the funding model will provide incentives to countries committed to making “deep-seated changes to education,” Julia Gillard, the Washington, D.C.-based organization's new chair and former Australian Prime Minister, said in an exclusive interview with Devex.

“We obviously want to see in countries around the world that both donor-sourced financing and domestic financing are allocated in the most efficient, effective and equitable way,” she explained. “We want to make sure that the reforms to education are system-wide and durable and that the countries that we’re working with are investing more of their own resources into education.”

Want to know more about Gillard’s thoughts on education and her priorities for GPE this year? Check out the full interview in Monday's Development Insider.
