Haiti Peace and Order Situation Improves

Quake-struck Haiti has returned to peace and order conditions before the deadly disaster a month ago, indicating an improved security situation after a period of sporadic fights over relief rations and turf control, a United Nations official said Feb. 11. Alain Le Roy, U.N. undersecretary-general for peacekeeping operations, said additional police officers and troops from Latin America and other countries are set to arrive in Haiti. The U.N. Security Council requested the deployment of some 3,500 additional peacekeepers to reinforce the U.N. stabilization mission.
