The U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee is hosting a hearing on Wednesday (May 11) to examine reports of violence and crimes against U.S. Peace Corps volunteers stationed overseas.
The hearing is in line with an ongoing investigation by the committee and will also look at how the Peace Corps is responding to the reports and what it is doing to ensure the safety of its volunteers.
“Recent information obtained from whistleblowers, numerous news reports, and the Peace Corps Inspector General Office shows that the Peace Corps is failing to adequately provide for the safety of volunteers, and address the serious crimes which have been committed against volunteers,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) said in a statement.
Ros-Lehtinen said she hopes the hearing will be followed with more Peace Corps reform hearings.
