How to consult your way into the World Bank

Close to a quarter of the World Bank’s 16,000-strong workforce is comprised of consultants. Upcoming changes in the World Bank’s contracting protocol, which includes an emphasis on more open-ended rather than fixed-term contracts, has suggested that extended-term consultants will be able to renew contracts for more than two years in the future.

For now, though, an extended-term consultant is a full-time job with a one-year contract, while a short-term consultant can’t exceed 150 days of pay per year.

Many people with no previous bank experience begin with short-term assignments. Job seekers who are interested in a consulting position should research the department or unit in their field of interest before applying, Roberto Amorosino, the bank’s senior recruitment manager, suggested in a video interview (see below).
