The IKEA Foundation is pledging more than €11 million ($11.7 million) to international groups providing humanitarian aid in Sudan with the aim of inspiring more funders to jump in and assist those affected by the ongoing deadly war between two rival Sudanese armies.
The foundation is donating €5 million to Médecins Sans Frontières, or MSF, for “urgent medical care and supplies” for those who have been maimed by airstrikes, explosions, and gunshots, among other things. It will give another €6.7 million to the Sweden-based nonprofit Better Shelter to provide 3,000 relief housing units for people displaced by the conflict.
“The violence in Sudan is a devastating human tragedy. It is our responsibility to alleviate the suffering of those caught in the crossfire,” IKEA Foundation CEO Per Heggenes said in a statement.
