Inside EBRD's €14.9B pipeline in 2023
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has 311 projects worth €14.9 billion in its pipeline for 2023. We looked into the data to see where it spent its money and what sectors it focused on last year.
By Alecsondra Kieren Si // 26 August 2024The year 2023 marked another high for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. EBRD financed over 300 pipeline projects worth €14.9 billion. This is an increase compared to last year’s €14.5 billion project pipeline. EBRD’s portfolio contains projects at all stages in its cycle: • 85 projects worth €3.8 billion in the signed stage. • 29 projects worth €909.4 million in the repaying stage. • 4 projects worth €67 million in the exploratory stage. • 149 projects worth €5.3 billion in the disbursing stage. • 4 projects worth €220.5 million in the concept review stage. • 37 projects worth €4 billion in the approved stage. The figures in this article are converted based on the exchange rates of the project's publication date. Canceled and completed projects were excluded from the analysis. The project information extracted from EBRD’s project list includes both the total project cost and the amount that EBRD will be financing. The analysis will focus on EBRD’s contribution only. Where did EBRD put its money? EBRD provides financing through different forms such as loans, equity investments, and guarantees. It may or may not fully finance the project. The bank funds an average of 64% of the total amount of the project. Of the 311 projects recorded last year, 83 were 100% fully funded by the bank. The majority of the projects financed by EBRD are in Europe and Central Asia, and the region received the most money with €13.3 billion. The next region receiving the most money is the Middle East and North Africa, with €1.5 billion, followed by East Asia and Pacific, with €101.8 million. At a country level, companies in Turkey received the most, with €2.7 billion, followed by Poland with €1.3 billion, Uzbekistan with €1.1 billion, Ukraine with €988.4 million, and then Egypt with €947.3 million. Sectoral focus EBRD financed 13 different sectors last year: • Financial institutions. • Energy. • Manufacturing and services. • Transport. • Municipal and environmental infrastructure. • Agribusiness. • Property and tourism. • Telecommunications, media, and technology. • Equity funds. • Natural resources. • Ferrous fabricated metal product manufacturing. • Nonferrous fabricated metal product manufacturing. • Pharma wholesalers and distribution. The bank’s sectoral priorities did not differ that much from its 2022 project portfolio. Financial institutions are still the bank’s main priority with 133 projects worth a total of €5.6 billion. Energy comes next with 43 projects worth €2.7 billion, followed by manufacturing and services with 34 projects worth almost €2 billion, and then the transport sector with 17 projects worth €1.2 billion. The top projects This is the list of the top projects in the pipeline, based on the amount of financing provided by EBRD. • €805.8 million to improve the sustainability and minimize the climate and environment footprint of EU economies. • €600 million to assist Turkish banks in post-earthquake recovery and reconstruction efforts. • €400 million to support Greek and Romanian corporations of all sizes in achieving low carbon pathway strategies. • €375 million to assist companies in investing in low-carbon transition, green energy, transport, and buildings. • €300 million to ensure continued liquidity to mitigate the accumulation of non-performing loans. • €300 million to improve the financial resilience of Morocco’s state-owned utility company. • €250 million to assist in liquidation needs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Uzbekistan. • €250 million to finance an offshore wind farm in Poland. • €250 million to finance green-certified logistics and industrial parks in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, and Serbia. • €216 million to promote regional and cross-border connectivity improvement, road safety enhancement, and assist the government in shifting to a more green economy in Uzbekistan.
