World Bank chief David Malpass has made the debt crisis in low-income countries a pillar of his presidency, and as he winds down that presidency, he is warning that the situation is only getting worse and there is a pressing need for creditors to offer relief to the most vulnerable or the world risks seeing backsliding on health and education.
“It's urgent that we get progress and that progress consists of concrete resolutions of debt that greatly helps countries reach sustainability,” Malpass said in an interview with Devex at the bank’s headquarters.
“I’m very worried about people in the poorest countries given the challenges they face, the starting point, and the difficulty for them in getting new resources, especially into their private sectors,” he added.
