The Canadian International Development Agency will provide USD70 million to boost greenhouse farming in Jamaica, according to a senior government official.
Minister of Agriculture Christopher Tufton said the funding is expected to enhance Jamaica’s greenhouse farming capacity by 15 percent this year, an improvement from last year’s 11 percent, RJR News reports.
Jamaica has been exploring greenhouse technology in recent years to improve agricultural production and reduce reliance on food imports.
The Ministry of Agriculture is currently completing about 40 greenhouses, which might add 330,000 tons of vegetables to the current national output. The initiative will also provide jobs to about 100 farmers.
