The next likely head of the United Kingdom’s aid watchdog has raised fears that its powers of “scrutiny or independence” are under threat from a government review of international development work.
The study, commissioned by Foreign Secretary David Lammy, is examining how to deepen integration of diplomacy and development within the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office — after Labour dumped a preelection pledge to create “a new model.”
Now Jillian Popkins, who is set to be confirmed as the new chief commissioner of the Independent Commission for Aid Impact, has pointed to the review among “risks that ICAI may face” in the near future.
