The African continent is home to around 30 million internally displaced persons, refugees and asylum-seekers, representing almost one-third of the world’s refugee population.
Almost all African countries are states parties to the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention and the Global Compact on Refugees which give a range of rights to refugees such as freedom of movement or residence for those who have been granted refugee status.
In 2016, countries also agreed to the Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework which encourages states to include refugees in communities and allow them access to education and labor markets to build their skills and allow them to become self-reliant.
