Millennium Challenge Corp. CEO Daniel Yohannes was in Tanzania June 3 for the groundbreaking ceremony of a project to construct a major highway that will connect the city of Tanga to the Kenyan border. The highway project is financed under Tanzania’s five-year compact with MCC, which focuses on transportation, water and energy.
This is the second trip to Africa by Yohannes as MCC chief.
“This road will provide easier access to markets, schools, and health centers,” Yohannes said during the event, which was also attended by Tanzanian President Jikaya Kikwete. “It will also open new opportunities for commerce and business development, including with neighboring Kenya.”
While in Tanzania, Yohannes also toured other sites of MCC-funded projects, including the Lower Ruvu Water Treatment Plant and a landing site in Zanzibar for a planned submarine power cable, according to a news release from the agency.
