
The Millennium Challenge Corp. will hire 40 staff members to manage the $350.7 million Millennium Challenge Account-Malawi as it sets up the new MCA. The establishment of MCA-Malawi operations will run through March 2012, when the five-year compact period will begin.
The compact, signed today (April 7) in Malawi, includes roughly $283 million for upgrading the country’s energy infrastructure, $25.7 million for power sector reform, $9 million to address cross-cutting issues such as monitoring and evaluation, and gender assessment and programming, and $33 million for program administration.

MCC’s deputy vice president for East and Southern Africa, Andrew Mayock, made the announcement about planned staffing and cost breakdown during an April 6 event hosted by MCC and the Initiative for Global Development highlighting opportunities for U.S. businesses overseas.
While Malawi has historically suffered from a troubled electricity sector with a weak regulator, the country has begun to take positive steps at energy sector reform, including increasing tariffs for players in the sector, he said.
