Forty-three members of the U.S. Congress have asked President Donald Trump to “reevaluate” his order to withdraw from the World Health Organization, arguing the United States “should not cede [its] title” as a global health leader.
In the letter, the officials touted the beneficial relationship between the U.S. and WHO, and the risks the withdrawal poses on the health of Americans as well as on the gains the world has made against many diseases, including polio eradication.
On his first day back in office, Trump issued an executive order announcing his intention to withdraw the U.S. from WHO. One of the issues he brought up was the “unfairly onerous payments” the U.S. provides to WHO compared to other countries such as China.
