The United Nations Development Program is partnering with Mitsui & Co. Ltd. to construct a solar-powered irrigation system in the Millennium Village of Chibuto in Mozambique.

The Millennium Villages program, which uses a community-led approach toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals, is backed by UNDP, Millennium Promise and Columbia University’s Earth Institute.

Mitsui is financing the USD2 million irrigation project. It seeks to pilot sustainable technologies to improve agricultural productivity and incomes in the rural communities of Mozambique.

The Ministry of Science and Technology will implement the project.
