The Asian Development Bank will provide USD49 million for a transportation project that aims to better link Nepal’s remote, rural communities to the country’s urban centers. The project is expected to boost trade and promote economic development in the country.
The financing, which will be part loan and part grant, will support improvements to some 195 kilometers of roads connecting Nepal’s northeastern rural communities to markets and services.
“Better roads will make it easier for farmers to get their products to neighboring markets, increasing their incomes and generating more rural jobs, which is critical in a region with high levels of poverty,” Hiroaki Yamaguchi, principal transport specialist at ADB’s South Asia Department, said in a news release.
