Some 5,000 low-income pregnant women in Peru are expected to benefit from an innovative health care project launched Aug. 27 by the Inter-American Development Bank, Cayetano Heredia University of Peru and Movistar.

Through the project, dubbed “Wawanet,” the women will be able to receive customized nutrition and pregnancy advice on their mobile phones. The project also aims to put together a system of clinical histories using mobile technology in a bid to improve health information systems for infants and mothers.

The project will be initially rolled out in the province of Callao in central Peru. It will include a review of potential business models that could be used to elevate the project to the national level.
