Niger’s military government is implementing a food drive to feed some 1.5 million people reeling from severe food shortages. Donors have so far only covered a third of the United Nations’ USD190 million aid appeal for the nation as of late April. Officials of Niger’s transition government will travel to Brussels this month to negotiate with the European Union to restore some USD450 million in aid suspended due to the ouster of President Mamadou Tandja in February. The government requested May 15 a further USD30 million to help curb polio, Reuters reports.
