Uganda declared an outbreak of a relatively rare strain of the deadly hemorrhagic disease Ebola on Thursday.
“An outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus Disease has been confirmed in Kampala, Uganda following confirmation from 3 National Reference Laboratories,” Permanent Secretary of the Uganda Ministry of Health Dr. Diana Atwine told the media.
The index patient, a 32-year-old male nurse, had a five-day history of a high fever, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. This progressed to bleeding from multiple parts of his body. He died on Wednesday from multiple organ failure in Kampala.
