Philanthropy is at a pivotal moment — we must remember ‘better is good’

We are at a fork in the road. Will we choose solidarity over fear?

Over the course of history, we’ve experienced rare but defining moments in which an aperture for dramatic, generational change is opened. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the Arab Spring, we’ve witnessed brave individual leaders and movements push for — and achieve — significant change both in our local communities and on the world stage.

As we experience the fall of foreign aid and the evolving political situation in the United States, another decisive moment is upon us. It presents, as all moments like this do, a significant challenge as well as an opportunity for those concerned about and committed to the future. In particular, it presents a pivotal moment for philanthropy.

These topics were at the heart of a recent convening, the Innovations in International Philanthropy Symposium, hosted by Network of Engaged International Donors, or NEID Global, and The Philanthropic Initiative. Expert panelists shared key insights — both historical and forward-looking — and urged global philanthropists to seize the moment to create the future we imagine, leveraging challenges into opportunities, and turning instability into resilience.
