Remaining USAID programs now under State Department, 5,200 programs canceled

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio put out the official numbers on how many USAID programs were terminated in recent weeks: 5,200.

This comprises 83% of the agency’s overall programming that existed in January which “spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve, (and in some cases even harmed), the core national interests of the United States,” he wrote on the social media platform X.

The Trump administration intends to keep about 18% — or about 1,000 of what were USAID programs — “in consultation with Congress” but these will now be administered “more effectively” under his State Department, he wrote.
