Scoop: MCC finalizes country program cuts, narrowing prior proposed list

While it’s been known for months that the Millennium Challenge Corporation would terminate a significant number of its programs, staff were informed on Wednesday exactly which countries would see funding cut, according to an email obtained by Devex.

Administration officials told staff back in July that a number of MCC compacts — large grant agreements often worth hundreds of millions of dollars — and other smaller threshold programs had been recommended for cancellation. At an August meeting, the board considered those recommendations but did not report which programs would be cut, saying it had to wait for congressional notifications to be completed.

The email laid out the final list of terminations. MCC has been working closely with Congress and other government agencies “on the orderly closure process for certain programs,” it noted.
