    For the first time, the world’s climate summit is taking place in the heart of the Amazon. The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP30, opens today in Belém, Brazil, amid growing pressure for countries to move from climate finance promises to concrete plans — from setting targets to actually implementing them.

    “We need road maps to fairly and systematically reverse deforestation, overcome our dependence on fossil fuels, and mobilize the resources necessary to achieve these goals,” said Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in his opening speech at the pre-COP Leaders’ Summit on Thursday.
