Anne-Marie Slaughter, the State Department’s policy planning director, officially stepped down Feb. 3 to return to Princeton University.
In a farewell letter to colleagues, which was obtained by Politico’s Laura Rozen, Slaughter identified five pointers that are “most important and most essential” to U.S. diplomacy and development efforts: elevation of development as a foreign policy tool, women’s empowerment, Internet freedom, technological solutions and public-private partnerships.
Slaughter said she will continue serving as a consultant to the State’s policy planning bureau. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, Jake Sullivan, will replace Slaughter.
