The top Gates Foundation nonhealth awardees in 2023
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation spent $6.3 billion in 2023, majority went to health, but $1.3 billion went into other program areas. We looked at the other program areas and listed the top awardees.

Devex has already covered these in depth in another article. But around $1.3 billion from the overall amount was spent on other topics, such as global growth, gender equality, and finance and resource planning. The Gates Foundation categorizes their awards into different divisions with respective topics that specify what the award aims to tackle. Among the different divisions, the Gates Foundation awarded the most to its global growth and opportunity division, with $792.6 million; followed by gender equality, with $302 million, and then global policy and advocacy, with $68.3 million. Among the specific topics that the Gates Foundation decided to focus on, agricultural development tops the list with $548.2 million, followed by women and girls’ empowerment with $243.2 million, then water, sanitation and hygiene with $91.2 million. There’s a few differences between awardee locations when it comes to health versus the other divisions. Awardees located in the United States still top the list with $487.2 million; followed by awardees located in Kenya, with $247.4 million; the United Kingdom, with $61.9 million; India, with $60.9 million; and Nigeria, with $40 million. Who were the top awardees? 1. AGRA Number of awards: Four. Total amount: $201,500,000. AGRA received a total of four awards worth $201.5 million. The largest award amounted to $105 million, meant for the advancement of inclusive agricultural transformation on the African continent. 2. Partners In Health Number of awards: One. Total amount: $50,000,000. Partners In Health received a single award amounting to $50 million to support a scholarship program at the University of Global Health Equity. 3. International Bank for Reconstruction and Development Number of awards: 11. Total amount: $47,325,327. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development received a whopping 11 awards amounting to $47.3 million. The highest is a $15 million award to provide support to the Global Water Security and Sanitation Partnership of the World Bank. 4. Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo Number of awards: Four. Total amount: $31,099,973. The Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo, or the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, was awarded a total of $31.1 million. The highest award amounted to $20 million to develop breeding and seed delivery systems for important crops for sub-Saharan Africa. 5. International Potato Center Number of awards: One. Total amount: $29,668,667. The International Potato Center received a single award worth $29.7 million to develop modern and efficient breeding systems for important root and banana staple crops in sub-Saharan Africa. 6. Dr. Reddy's Formulations Ltd Number of awards: One. Total amount: $25,923,039. Dr. Reddy’s Formulations also received a single award worth $25.9 million to increase the manufacturing capability and manufacturing supply of self-injectable contraceptive products. 7. International Center for Tropical Agriculture Number of awards: Five. Total amount: $21,153,367. The International Center for Tropical Agriculture received five awards worth $21.2 million. The highest of which was worth $12.5 million for methane mitigation and the improvement of productivity of small-scale livestock farmers and pastoralists. 8. Bloomberg Philanthropies Number of awards: One. Total amount: $20,000,000. Bloomberg Philanthropies received a single award amounting to $20 million as a form of support for their Reduce Tobacco Use initiative. 9. CARE Number of awards: Five. Total amount: $17,196,274. CARE received five awards totaling $17.2 million. The largest of the awards amounted to $10 million to accelerate progress to close the gender digital divide by identifying solutions that will improve women’s livelihoods, economic security, and resilience. 10. PATH Number of awards: Four. Total amount: $16,898,924. PATH received four awards worth a total of $16.9 million. The highest of which amounts to $6.8 million to support the government and partners in advancing the introduction of hormone replacement therapy treatments and self-injections.
