Creating conditions for effective migrations could involve development programs in lower-income countries designed to supply the right kinds of workers to boost productivity in high-income countries.
Speaking at Devex Impact House on the sidelines of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund annual meetings, Lant Pritchett, research director at Labor Mobility Partnerships, warned of the “massive aging problem” that will affect the balance of the labor market.
With high-income countries needing more workers, it will be critical to develop orderly pathways to migration, including partnerships with lower-income countries to develop short-term, rotational jobs programs.
