Senate Democrats excoriated President Donald Trump’s choice to oversee State Department policy on the United Nations and other international organizations, accusing him of promoting white supremacy, racism, and antisemitism in a long series of public statements, podcasts, and social media posts.
But Jeremy Carl, the administration’s nominee to serve as U.S. assistant secretary of state for international organizations, received little support from Senate Republicans in Thursday’s highly charged Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, raising serious doubts about his prospects for confirmation.
Carl, a senior fellow at the Claremont Institute who served as a deputy assistant secretary of the interior during Trump’s first administration, has carved out a prominent role in Trump’s orbit through his anti-immigration writings and commentary. His book “The Unprotected Class: How Anti-White Racism is Tearing America Apart” portrays a vision of white grievance in the face of an increasingly diverse nation.
