African philanthropy is gaining momentum, fueled by the growing wealth of people on the continent, strong diaspora contributions, and increased support from non-African funders in recent years.
However, as the sector evolves, it's crucial to uphold core principles such as humility, trust, and efficiency, Zimbabwean billionaire and philanthropist Tsitsi Masiyiwa emphasized at a Devex event on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly last week.
“Philanthropists often want to be honored in ways disproportionate to their actual impact. It has to stop,” Masiyiwa said.
