The United Nations has condemned the Aug. 18 ambush of its peacekeeping base in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which killed three Indian blue helmets and injured at least six others.
Some 60 unidentified men armed with machetes and spears attacked the operating base of the U.N. Organization Stabilization Mission, or MONUSCO, in Kirumba. The assailants also stole two MONUSCO weapons.
The motive of the attack is unclear.
“The Secretary-General [Ban Ki-moon] condemns the assault and calls on the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to launch an immediate investigation into this incident and ensure that the perpetrators are swiftly identified and brought to justice,” said a U.N. statement.
