UN Kicks Off Polio Drive in Nigeria

The World Health Organization and the Unicef began their campaign to rid Nigeria of polio. The two United Nations agencies intend to administer 45 million doses of the polio vaccine to 40 million children in the African country. Immunization in Nigeria, known to host two-thirds of the global polio cases, has stalled due to resistance by Muslim families who worried that the operation carried a plot to make infant girls infertile. Nigerian authorities already told parents that they will face jail time if they refuse to have their children vaccinated against the virus.
