The United Nations is seeking a record USD7 billion for 2009 to help provide drinking water, emergency shelter, medicine and other basic necessities to some 30 million people in 31 countries. The sum, which is double the agency’s 2008 aid appeal, seeks to address the impact of food price hikes and humanitarian crises in Africa, among others. Sudan is set to receive the largest portion of the aid appeal with USD2.2 billion. African states including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia and Zimbabwe will also considerably benefit from the requested funding. (“UN makes record USD7bn aid appeal” - BBC, Nov. 19, 2008)
