UN Official Encourages Haiti to Hold Presidential Election

Haiti should push through with the presidential election scheduled later this year despite the challenge posed by the Jan. 12 earthquake, acting United Nations Haiti mission chief Edmond Mulet told The Associated Press. Mulet said the country cannot afford the constitutional “slippage” ensuing from the cancellation of the election, as it recovers from the disaster. The government already cancelled legislative elections in February and has yet to declare its resolution on the presidential vote.
