Deputy United Nations Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro urged the international community to support disaster risk reduction measures in the some of the world’s poorest countries, Xinhua News reports. Speaking at a high-level summit of the Economic and Social Council, Migiro said support for these measures is crucial to boost the drive to meet the 2015 deadline of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals.

In the same meeting, Migiro pushed for the development of an international debt mechanism that is needed to prevent future global economic crises.
