UN Temporarily Closes Peshawar Offices Over Security Concerns

The United Nations temporarily closed its offices in Penshawar, Pakistan, following a deadly attack April 5 on the U.S. consulate office in the city, Agence France-Presse reports.

“For security reasons, United Nations’ offices in Peshawar have closed temporarily for two days,” U.N. spokeswoman Ishrat Rizvi said. “We took this step as a precautionary measure and for the protection of our staff, we have advised them to work from home for two days.”

The Pakistani faction of the Taliban claimed the attack on the U.S. consulate, which killed two security personnel and damaged a portion of the wall surrounding the building. The militants said this was their response to the U.S. drone war on militants along the Pakistani-Afghan border.

AFP notes that a political rally in the northwestern town of Timargarah was also bombed on the same day as the consulate attack, killing at least 51 and wounding 89 persons as of April 6.
